Literacy Support Programme

The Child and Family Centre offers help for children that may have difficulty with development of reading and writing skills. We believe that every learner is unique and the “one size fits all” approach offered by many commercially available literacy development programmes may not address a child’s specific needs. Our programme is individualised and child focused. We are committed to identifying and responding to your child’s specific needs in a professional and economical manner.

Programme Types

Programmes are geared toward helping students who may just have a weakness in literacy skills and need some additional development in this area as well as students with specific learning difficulties (Dyslexia/Dysgraphia).

Literacy Support

(Pre-school/Kindergarten and Early Primary)

For students in Kindergarten or early primary who are presenting with delay or gaps in literacy skills, individual sessions are the best way to address these issues. Sessions will focus on phonics, de-coding, en-coding, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. The mechanics of writing and simple writing conventions could also be targeted during these sessions.

(Upper primary and Middle School)

Sessions for older children may have more focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development and fluency (as well as writing) depending on the needs of the child. A Writers Workshop or 6 traits of Writing model will be used for those children struggling with the process of written expression. These are systematic approaches to enhance fundamental skills required for effective communication through writing.

All literacy interventions are intensive, goal focused and time specific programmes that are tailored to a child’s individual needs. For that reason students are encouraged to take 2 – 3 sessions a week for an 8 – 12 week cycle of individual sessions.
